Hi Tom, The story is that Paxton was standing for parliament, he said that if he was elected he would build a bridge over the river close to were you did the painting. The bridge would be very handy for the local farmers and make life easy for them. To show it was a genuine offer he had the stone cut and delivered to the site. When he was not elected he had the stone removed and used it to build the tower over looking the site of the intended bridge, saying “it will remind them of what could have been!”
Ha! I had no idea! That's a brilliant story. Can't imagine that would've made him any more popular. I'll remember it every time I see the tower now. Thanks Dave :)
