Lifeboats at St Justinians, and Whitesands beach with Carn Llidi - Pembrokeshire, UK

Here are two plein air paintings from the weekend. The first is of the lifeboat station at St Justinians. There is now a brand new lifeboat (pictured, moored further out) and thus the old lifeboat station is soon to be decommissioned. There are rumours that it is to be removed, and possibly rebuilt somewhere else. I think that it may even be a listed building. Whether or not it is to be removed, there are plans to build a new structure to house the replacement lifeboat, somewhere to the left of the painting's viewpoint. Therefore, I was really keen to paint the scene as it currently appears!
On the painting's horizon sits Ramsey Island/Ynys Dewi. I've painted it in differing moods and from much further away a number of times, but I've never actually painted it in it's entirety, nor from this close.

The second painting is just around the corner from the lifeboat house, and shows the view towards Whitesands beach. It's a great little surf spot that gets popular during the Summer months. Carn Llidi, somewhat set back, and above the beach, also appears in a lot of my paintings, but this is a new angle for me.
The painting is much quicker and looser than the one of St Justinians, which I made on location over two consecutive days, the weather having taken a turn for the worst on my first day!

After The Rain, Abermawr - Pembrokeshire

An après-surf painting of Abermawr. When I got in the sea, the low pressure system was almost directly overhead; it was overcast, raining and blowing an absolute gale.  By the time I got out, it had passed and the sun had come out, the wind had dropped a bit and it'd stopped raining too, so naturally I stayed to paint the scene.

Recent Sketches From Pembrokeshire And Beyond

Here are three recent watercolour sketches. The first is of the sun going down over Carn Llidi in North Pembrokeshire.  It's the first time that I've ever painted the sun, and because it was behind the cloud, it was just about safe enough to look at.

The next is looking South across the Cleddau River from Milford Haven. Like most of my work, it was painted on location. Unlike most of my work, it was interrupted by the Police who came to see what I was doing!

The final sketch is a study of Usk bridge. Thankfully I was not disturbed while painting this.

St Davids Cathedral

This is a plein air painting of St Davids Cathedral in Pembrokeshire. Although I painted it during the middle of the day, there were some decidedly un-nocturnal owls calling to one another in the wooded valley surrounding the little stream.

Recent Sketches, Pembrokeshire.

Here are two recent sketches made during an extended spell of uncommonly clement weather, here in Pembrokeshire. The first is a lovely old barn, home to a crowd of very happy swallows who kept flitting in and out and chattering away as I worked. The second, which is much quicker, is inland, along the Cleddau river. It's near Landshipping, and is somewhere that Graham Sutherland was known to spend a lot of time sketching and painting.
